Ralph Boston's record was beaten by Igor Ter–Ovanesyan, of the USSR, in 1962 and 1967. Ter–Ovanesyan's second record, which was set at altitude in Mexico City, was beaten by Bob Beamon at the Mexico City Olympics – also at altitude – in 1968.
